Athena is on fire off the Isles of Scilly
Fishing News
Wednesday, 27 October 2010 10:04

AthenaFreezer factory trawler "Athena" is on fire 230 miles south-west off the coast of Isles of Scilly.

There are 111 crew of mixed nationalities (Chinese, Russian, Peruvian and Scandanavian) on board and the air and sea rescue operation is under way.

"The fire was so fierce the skipper decided to evacuate 81 people to life rafts but because of the distances out a helicopter will only have about 20 minutes over the top of it" Mark Clark from the Martime and Coastal Agency told Sky News.

A spokesman for the Coastguard said: "We are co-ordinating a search and rescue mission, but it's a long way from either the UK or French coast.

"We put out a broadcast action, which means we sent out a message to any ships in the area that could assist.

"We have got some ships that have responded and are proceeding to the area. We've got three commercial vessels proceeding with one, a cargo ship, already there.

"There are 81 persons in life rafts with 30 people remaining on the ship fighting the fire.

"The cargo ship is helping to offload people in the life rafts.

"We believe the situation is under control. The fire is still burning, but less than it was."

The ship is owned by Faroese-based Thor Offshore and Fisheries. The vessel is 105 m long and was built in 1992 in Spain. In the beginning of this year the vessel was rebuilt in China after a previous fire in 2008.

Constructive first round of mackerel negotiations in London
Fishing News
Friday, 15 October 2010 21:08

jacob_vestergaard1The Faroe Islands convened a meeting with EU, Norway and Iceland in London this week to begin negotiations between officials on an agreement for the management of mackerel in 2011. Although a final agreement was not reached, it was decided to meet again at the end of the month to continue consultations.

“I am pleased that the talks in London have been conducted in a constructive and cooperative spirit, and that there is a genuine desire on all sides to find a lasting solution“, said Minister of Fisheries, Jacob Vestergaard. He underlined the need for negotiators to take the quality time necessary to ensure a fair and balanced agreement for the future.

Mackerel and other shared pelagic fish stocks in the Northeast Atlantic have vital importance for the Faroe Islands, where fisheries are the mainstay of the national economy. In the absence of a joint international management arrangement for the stock this year, the Faroe Islands decided to limit mackerel fisheries by the Faroese fleet to 85,000 tonnes, part of which is exchanged with other nations through bilateral fisheries agreements, with a portion also set aside for dedicated research on mackerel in Faroese waters. Other coastal states have also set limits on their respective mackerel fisheries for 2010. Together these unilateral fishing limits far exceed the total catch level recommended by ICES.

Scotland's pelagic fleet future depends on the mackerel talks
Fishing News
Thursday, 14 October 2010 11:33

The talks between EU, Norway, Iceland and Faroe Islands over mackerel quotas for 2011 going in London this week "could define the future" of Scottish pelagic fishing fleet, according to the Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Association and Scottish Fishermen’s Federation.

Ian Gatt, CEO of the Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Association, also urged the parties to find a resolution to ongoing dispute over Iceland and Faroe Islands unilateral quota allocation. “We have seen what uncontrolled fishing has done to the blue whiting stock with the latest scientific advice recommending a huge cut in quota by 93 percent for next year. This must not be allowed to happen to mackerel, and it is essential that a sensible deal is reached this week.”
